In February cargo turnover in the Port of Liepaja was stable with a positive tendency
13 march, 2018
In first two months 2018, companies in the Port of Liepaja handled 1.4 mln tons of different cargoes. The biggest proportion had agricultural cargoes – 51%, followed by building materials, anthracite, ro-ro cargoes and timber. In two months of 2018, dry bulk cargoes were 79% of the total cargo turnover, general cargoes – 14%, but liquid cargoes 7%. In January and February number of serviced vessels – 260, but the number of passengers – 5 175.
As explained by Liepaja SEZ General Manager Janis Lapins, in 2018, Liepaja SEZ Authority in cooperation with entrepreneurs in the port are proceeding already started development projects and active work with cargo owners and freight carriers. That is the main precondition for stable cargo flow with a positive tendency. In January and in February, the handling of agricultural products of year 2017 continued at the Port of Liepaja.
Liepaja SEZ General Manager Janis Lapins: “There are no two different years or grain seasons, but at the same time agricultural cargoes is the main cargo group in the Port of Liepaja. At present, the transshipment of grains grown in 2017 is continuing actively, and this is largely due to the prolonged rainy season in the last three months of the past year, which has shifted the harvest handling for at least two months. Grain amount in port`s warehouses is big enough and it means that active grain handling is still going on. The main task of the Liepaja SEZ Authority is to take care of implementation of qualitative services. This is connected with the continuous cooperation of the JSC "Latvijas dzelzceļš", providing wagon handling both through Liepaja station and the Northern Park, as well as discussing railway tariffs. It was also possible to improve the speed of wagon delivery, which is not less important for both port operators and residents.”
In February, in the Port of Liepaja were handled 742.2 thous. tons of cargoes, which is more than on average per month in 2017. The increase is mainly in the dry bulk cargo segment, which is due to active cereal season shifts due to rain storms of at least two months at the end of 2017, and with a steady flow of cargo in the group of construction materials, anthracite and wood chips.
In February, 2018, the biggest cargo turnover had LSEZ Ltd. “Liepaja Bulk Terminal Ltd” - 296 191.88 tons and LSEZ Ltd. “Ekers Stividors LP” - 245 555.26 tons. Increase in cargo turnover had also LSEZ Ltd. “Laskana”, LSEZ Ltd. “Mols L”, LSEZ Ltd. “Baltic Transhipment Center” and LSEZ Ltd. “Terrabalt”. In February, the number of serviced vessels – 132, but the number of serviced passengers - 2 518.
