On February 1, Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of the Republic of Latvia Mr. Arturs Toms Plešs paid a one-day working visit to Liepaja, got acquainted with the activities of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone and its companies.
“I highly appreciate and welcome the vision of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority, which is aimed at sustainable, balanced and greener development of the region. The growth of business in the City of Liepaja is beneficial not only to the local population, but also to the national economy as a whole. I am sure, that the Liepaja SEZ Authority will continue to use its potential wisely and look for innovative and modern solutions to further increase the business capacity”, said the Minister.
As indicated by the Acting CEO of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Uldis Hmieļevskis, during the working visit we received support from the Minister with regard to the Liepaja SEZ Authority`s vision on the development of the former Liepaja steel plant territory. “Establishment of the Liepaja Industrial Park will not be a matter of one or even two years, however, it is important to move forward step by step. It is not possible to proceed further without the state support and participation. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development is and will be an important partner, whose support is needed to return the former Liepaja steel plant into economic circulation, however, at a completely different and significantly higher level, at the same time returning the long-time closed territories for public access and use.”
Together with the Mayor of Liepaja Gunārs Ansiņš and Acting CEO of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Uldis Hmieļevskis, the Minister also visited two Liepaja SEZ metal processing companies - LSEZ SIA Jensen Metal and LSEZ SIA Caljan, which started their business in the Liepaja SEZ more than 15 years ago.
