The stevedoring companies of the Port of Liepaja closed the past year with the historically largest volume of transshipped cargoes, thus surpassing the record of 7.54 million tons, which was achieved back in 2018.
The total cargo turnover in 2022 was 7.61 million tons, or an increase of 7.8% as compared to that of the year 2021.
In the previous year, the dry bulk cargo segment predominated, comprising 67% of all transshipped cargoes in the Port of Liepaja.
The second largest segment – break bulk cargoes - accounted for 29% of the overall cargo volume in 2022.
Among the stevedoring companies of the Port of Liepaja, the largest cargo turnover in 2022 was reached by LSEZ SIA "Liepaja Bulk Terminal", which handled 2.5 million tons, which is an increase of 17.3%, as compared to their performance in 2021, LSEZ SIA "Ekers Stividors LP" transshipped 2 million tons, which is an increase of 12.2%, as compared to the year 2021, and LSEZ SIA "Terrabalt" – 1.7 million tons, or an increase by 9.6%, as compared to the year 2021.
Also, in 2022, the City of Liepaja announced itself as an attractive destination for cruise routes in the Baltic Sea, which resulted in six cruise ships bringing more than 2,500 guests from the USA, the UK, Germany and other countries to the city.
