Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority On 8 January 2024 signed contracts for the commencement of construction works for the project "Liepaja Industrial Park Territory Development - Phase 1". The project will involve the redevelopment of the former Liepājas metalurgs factory site in Liepāja between Brīvības Street, Meldru Street, Liepāja Lake, Ezermalas Street, Parka Street and Zemnieku Street with adjacent areas bordering Liepāja Lake, by constructing public street infrastructure with utility networks, to provide basic business infrastructure, creating a functioning industrial park of national importance, ensuring the functionality of the developed area in accordance with the approved Liepaja Industrial Park Long-Term Development Strategy 2023. -2038.
The aim of the project is to transform the territory of the former factory "Liepājas metalurgs" into a green eco-industrial park of national significance, by building modern basic infrastructure, attracting investors in RIS3 sectors of high added value export-oriented production and creation of skilled, well-paid jobs.
The project foresees investments in the construction of publicly accessible infrastructure - streets and underground utilities.
The project will result in a number of significant long-term benefits:
- Increased employment in the region, boosting the economic activity of Liepaja, the South Kurzeme Region and the Kurzeme Region, and reducing social burdens;
- attraction of higher value-added industries and needed specialists, which will contribute to the development of education and research sectors and ensure the growth of an educated workforce both in the Kurzeme region and in Latvia;
- the development of higher value-added sectors, their cooperation mechanisms and ecosystem in climate-neutral solution-oriented areas, which will contribute to the development of innovative solutions and the creation of new enterprises at local level;
- Increased tax revenues for the national and local budgets, which will contribute significantly to the financing of national and local government functions.
The project is financed under the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism Plan, under the reform and investment axis 3.1 "Regional Policy", under sub-item 3.1.1.3.i. "Investment in public business infrastructure for the development of industrial parks and sites in the regions".
