The Port of Liepaja activities in January 2025
The stevedoring companies of the Port of Liepaja handled 520.3 thousand tons of various cargoes in January of this year Just to summarize - bulk cargo accounted for 63%, general cargoes for 32%, and liquid cargoes for 5% in the overall turnover of the first month of the year.
Notably, the flow of ro-ro cargoes on the Liepaja – Travemünde (Germany) ferry line keeps growing. The number of ro-ro units transported in January has increased by 10%. Turnover of timber and logs has also increased - by +23.8% and +12.2%, accordingly.
The decrease in the agricultural cargo segment may be explained by adverse weather conditions and the established import duty. As indicated by Juris Matvejevs, LSEZ SIA “Liepaja Bulk Terminal” Board Member, decrease in grain turnover in the agricultural cargo segment was expected. At the same time, the company puts much effort into attracting new cargo groups, including those from Central Asia.
Cargo turnover is often determined by seasonal and weather conditions and the market demand, however, what matters is not just the amount of handled tons, but the added value of the handled cargos – for instance, “Norplast Piemare” LSEZ AS company, which specializes in the production of large composite products for oil industry and installation and shipment of floating closed fish cage systems from its own terminal in the Port of Liepaja. Even though the company shipped the cargo which weighed only 19.7 tons, the contribution of which to the overall cargo turnover is insignificant, the economic benefit is large, as the cargo was produced by themselves in their own production facility.
The Liepaja SEZ Authority, in cooperation with port companies and strategic investors, will continue its work also in 2025 to create a symbiosis between the transport and logistics industry and manufacturing and to promote development of environmentally safe and strategically important industries.
