A Time Capsule Installed in the Foundations of the New Scania Latvia Service Centre in Liepaja
With the ceremonial installation of a time capsule in Liepaja, Scania Latvia has marked the first stage in the construction of a new truck service and sales center. This project is significant not only for the company’s further development but also for the regional transport infrastructure and business environment.
For the Liepaja region, the new Scania Latvia center will be a major asset, becoming one of the most important transport service infrastructure facilities in Kurzeme. It will not only improve service availability for professional carriers but also promote regional economic activity, support local business development, and contribute to a modern, safe, and sustainable infrastructure in the transport sector.
The new service center will replace the current Liepaja service facility, located just a few minutes’ drive from the future site. The building, with an area of approximately 1,300 m², will house three repair and maintenance lines, allowing up to ten trucks to be serviced simultaneously. The center will also include a modern, fully equipped truck wash and comfortable premises for service and sales specialists. The total investment in the development of the service center amounts to 4.6 million euros. It will ensure high-quality service for customers both now and in the future, servicing diesel and gas trucks, battery-powered trucks.
The project was initiated due to the growing demand for high-quality, fast, and technologically advanced transport services in the region. With increasing freight volumes and the growing importance of logistics in the Baltics, demand for efficient service solutions continues to rise.
Aigars Pušinskis, Managing Director of Scania Latvia, emphasizes the project’s significance: “The new Scania service center in Liepaja is a strategic turning point in the company’s development. It will greatly improve availability of transport services in Kurzeme and, I believe, also in the Baltic region. The capacity of the existing center had been reached, and the decision to build a new facility was a logical step. This modernized center, together with our team of specialists, will enable us to provide an even higher level of service quality.”
The construction is being carried out by Mapri Būve company - its Board Member Holger Kald confirms that the work is progressing successfully: “There are three symbolic milestones in a construction process: placement of the time capsule, the topping-out ceremony, and the opening of the facility. We expect the new Scania Latvia center to be ready by next autumn. Winters in Liepaja tend to be favorable, allowing uninterrupted work. Projects like this are extremely important for regions — they create jobs, strengthen the business environment, and encourage investment beyond the capital.”
Raivo Špaks, Head of the Business Development Department of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, adds:
“The operations of manufacturing and port companies in the Liepaja SEZ rely heavily on road freight transport. Regular Stena Line ferry traffic between the Port of Liepaja and Travemünde in Germany also plays a key role — it is essentially an extension of the German Autobahn, with an annual cargo turnover valued at around 4 billion euros. Construction of a new Scania Latvia truck service and sales center in Liepaja is the best confirmation of the economic vitality of the city and the region. When there is demand, there will be supply.”
Special attention in the project has been given to energy efficiency and environmentally friendly solutions: renewable-energy heat pumps are planned for heating, and solar panels will be installed on the roof to reduce electricity costs in the long term. Both the building and its territory will feature an intelligent lighting system that adapts to natural light levels and human movement. Such solutions will allow the new center to operate more efficiently and reduce its environmental impact while providing a modern working environment for employees and top-level service for customers.
