In September, the cargo turnover of the Port of Liepaja was 619,715.82 tons

The largest cargo group in the Port of Liepaja in September was bulk cargoes: 430.7 thousand tons. tons (423.8 thousand tons in September 2022). The bulk cargo segment is dominated by the agricultural cargoes, the flow of which was definitely affected by the changing and unfavorable weather conditions in summer and the increasing competition. As stated by Juris Matvejevs, Board Member of LSEZ SIA "Liepaja Bulk Terminal Ltd", the situation in the transport and logistics sector has changed significantly in recent years, it is more difficult to plan and to predict the flow of cargo, however, the company is still working and attracting new cargo flows. Stability is ensured by the terminal's storage capacity and the ability to simultaneously process more than 30 different types of agricultural cargoes.

LSEZ SIA "Liepaja Bulk Terminal Ltd" handled 219,856.59 tons of cargo in September this year (154.48 thousand tons in September 2022), which is significantly more than the year before, however, the agricultural cargo segment is one of the most variable with seasonality and the active cereal season is only 4-5 months, depending on the harvest.

In the bulk cargo segment, the turnover of construction materials is also stable, to a large extent due to the cement volumes produced in Latvia, but with the fall, the renewable energy resource of energy cargo. Moreover, the recently attracted raw sugar, which is imported from Brazil and sent further to Uzbekistan in the Central Asia - just in September 2023 amounted to 33 thousand tons Among “new cargoes” in the Port of Liepaja, metal ores and ferroalloys should be mentioned as well.

In order to present the advantages of the Port of Liepaja and to discuss the development of international transport and logistics services and infrastructure, and the reduction of trade barriers in the global trade flow, the Liepaja SEZ CEO Uldis Hmieļevskis, together with the Liepaja Port stevedoring companies, participated in the 6th International Transport and Logistics Business Forum "New Silk Way" and the transport logistics exhibition "TransLogistica Kazakhstan 2023" in Astana - the capital city of the Republic of Kazakhstan a week ago.

"Kazakhstan, like other Central Asian countries, is one of the business partners of the Port of Liepaja. Along with the change of the logistics routes, agricultural products and metal alloys are exported, while sugar, soybeans, and machine-building goods are delivered to the Central Asian region through the Port of Liepaja", shared Uldis Hmieļevskis. Also, the ferry traffic, provided by the Stena Line ferry line and LSEZ SIA "Terrablat", which is the most direct route between Latvia and Germany, plays an important role in the cargo supply chain. In September of this year, the "Terrablt" company handled 155,461.87 tons of cargo (in September 2022: 143.43 thousand tons)

In September 2023, altogether 118 ships were serviced in the Port of Liepaja with 7,304 passengers on board. The largest cargo volume - 33,000 tons of wheat - was loaded and exported at the berths of the "DanStore" terminal by the motor vessel "Aviona" -, while the largest imported cargo amount was that of the raw sugar delivered to the Port of Liepaja by the motor vessel "Tai Harvest" and discharged by the "LSEZ SIA Liepaja Bulk Terminal".

In the nine months of this year, the cargo turnover in the Port of Liepaja amounted to 5,189,070.99 tons, 1,056 ships were serviced.
