Record-high cargo turnover in October this year
Altogether, in October, 573.2 thousand tons of bulk cargoes were handled, whereof a significant amount accounts to grain and agricultural cargoes as well as to construction materials and renewable energy resources (wood chips and wood pellets).
Likewise, the volume of RO-RO cargoes is continuing to rise, to a large extent thanks to the infrastructure development projects implemented by LSEZ "Terrabalt" SIA and the project of a new access road implemented by the Liepaja SEZ Authority, as a result of which the ferry company Stena Line Latvia has more convenient conditions to provide regular ferry service six times a week to Travemünde, Germany.
The next significant step to be taken for further development refers to the reconstruction of Berth No 46. Uldis Hmieļevskis, CEO of the Liepaja SEZ, noted that the ferry line transports goods worth 4 billion euros annually. He further admitted: we cannot underestimate how significant this ferry route is for the Latvian manufacturing companies and the Latvian economy as a whole.
During his visit to Liepaja, the Latvian Minister of Finance Arvils Ašeradens was introduced to the reconstruction project of Berth No 46. The Minister acknowledged that competitive industries is a high priority to the government. "The manufacturing companies need export channels to deliver their goods to other countries, and the main export market is Europe. The Port of Liepaja is showing good results, and it is our duty to find a solution how to provide the required transport infrastructure. Today we discussed the issue and will continue discussions with the Ministry of Transport on how to find a solution."
In the nine months of this year, the cargo turnover in the Port of Liepaja was 5,9 million tons, 1,168 ships were handled, and 82,695 passengers called the Port of Liepaja.
