The Port of Liepaja welcomes a ship generating energy with wind turbines

On June 25, a ship of an innovative design under the name WAALVLIET arrived at the Port of Liepaja. WAALVLIET (IMO 9996874) is a Dry bulk/Mini bulker built in 2025 and is sailing under the Dutch flag. She has an overall length (LOA) of 88 meters and a width (beam) of 13 meters. Her summer deadweight capacity is 3,800 tons.

The WAALVLIET represents new technology in short sea shipping. A key highlight is the diesel-electric propulsion system, offering efficient and environmentally conscious performance. Additionally, the vessel is fitted with the innovative VentoFoil system by eConowind, using wind power to further reduce fuel consumption.

It is part of the Vliet series, known for the wind-assisted propulsion and diesel-electric drivetrains, with a focus on sustainability and future-proof design.

The WAALVLIET brought a cargo of soybeans to the Port of Liepaja, having previously departed from the Port of Rotterdam.
