The recently elected Council of the Association ''Liepaja District Partnership'' familiarizes itself with the necessary infrastructure for fishermen in the Port of Liepaja
On August 9, the new council of the ‘’Liepaja District Partnership'' association got acquainted with the projects implemented by the Liepaja SEZ Authority in the Port of Liepaja to provide the necessary infrastructure for fishermen. Together with the Liepaja SEZ CEO Uldis Hmieļevskis and the Deputy Technical Director Egils Sveilis, the representatives of the Association also discussed the needs and ideas that could be implemented in the new Action Program of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund for the development of fisheries under the ‘’Fishing Ports and Landing Places'' event.
The fishing industry has always been and is important in Liepaja, as it consists not only of fishing, but also of fish processing and fish product manufacturing companies. Therefore, by arranging the necessary infrastructure, the Liepaja SEZ administration supports fishing, helps to improve the daily working conditions of fishermen and at the same time organizes the urban environment, making it attractive to every resident and city guest.
Within the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund Action Program for Fisheries Development 2014-2020, in the event ‘’Fishing Ports and Landing Places'', the Liepaja SEZ Authority implemented three projects in 2017: reconstruction of the Old Wharf (Vecā Ostmala) in the section from Uliha Street to Celtnieku Street by replacing the road surface, building new and reconstructing existing underground utilities. As part of the 3 rd phase of the project, in 2019, the area at the end of Uliha Street was improved by dismantling a warehouse built during the Soviet era and building a parking area and a fish unloading place for trucks.
The most ambitious appeared to be the 2 nd round of the project, which was put into operation at the beginning of 2023, as part of which Berths No 71, No 72, No 83, No 85, No 86 and No 87 were renovated and reconstructed totaling to the overall length of more than 600 meters of renovated berths. Moreover, an 800-meter-long road span to ensure traffic of the fishermen’s trucks was renovated and improved the Liepaja SEZ CEO Uldis Hmieļevskis and the Deputy Technical Director Egils Sveilis discussed with the Council of the Association which projects to support fishing and fish processing are planned to be implemented in the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund Action Program for Fisheries Development from 2021-2027.
