The stability of the Port of Liepaja operation is ensured by the variety of cargo types

In the four months of 2024, the stevedoring companies of the Port of Liepaja handled 2.54 million tons of various cargoes – very much the same amount as handled in four months last year. The stability of the cargo to a large extent was ensured by the variety of cargo types and transshipment of the cargoes of local origin. Thus, from January to April including, 479 ships were serviced, and the number of self-propelled/non-engine ro-ro units transported by ferry amounted to 31 945.

The volume of cargo of local origin in the Port of Liepaja accounts for more than 50%, i.e. the Latvian, grain and a variety of other agricultural products, timber, woodchips, cement, as well as the cargoes transported on the ferry line, being provided by domestic industrial companies.

For four years the Liepaja Port stevedoring company “Mols L” has been successfully cooperating with SIA “BaltBio”, whose main activity is peat extraction and transportation. The peat is exported via the Port of Liepaja to the European countries - Germany, Denmark and other, thus, 4 to 5 ships are carrying c.a. 3 thousand tons of peat every spring from the Port of Liepaja to serve the European countries to plant tomatoes and cucumbers said Matīss Kozlovs, Board
Member of SIA "BaltBio" company. The dry bulk cargo segment still remains the largest group of commodities in the Port of Liepaja and accounts for 67% of the entire annual cargo turnover.

The second largest cargo group - breakbulk cargoes – accounts for 30% of the ransshipped cargoes or 760 thousand tons in the four months of this year.
The largest volume of cargo in the general cargo segment is provided by the Liepaja - Travemunde ferry line. During the four months of the current year, the amount of cargo transported on the ferry line was 610 thousand tons (31 945 units) - an increase of 16% as compared to the same time period last year. Āris Ozoliņš, Chairman of the Board of the "Terrabalt" LSEZ SIA company, which is servicing the ferry line added: "All we need to do is to work! We have diversified risks and cargo flows. The cargoes for transshipment are available!”
