Oskars Kalpaks Bridge to Close to Traffic for Three Days for International Film Production
From 16 to 24 October, Liepaja will briefly be transformed into a filming location for an international film production. The city will host the filming of an adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the novel from the internationally acclaimed Millennium book series. The production is being produced by Left Bank Pictures, the company known for projects such as The Crown and Dept. Q.
The Oskars Kalpaks Bridge has been selected as one of the key filming locations for the series, playing a particularly important role in the production. For three days, the bridge will be closed to pedestrians and road traffic during filming, while vessel traffic will also be restricted.
Filming on the Oskars Kalpaks Bridge will take place from 19 to 21 October. During this period, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to plan their journeys to and from Karosta in advance and allow for additional travel time. In cooperation with the municipality, special bus services will operate along a diversion route. Information about this service will be displayed at both ends of the bridge. Public transport services will also be diverted along alternative routes.
Closure of the Oskars Kalpaks Bridge to pedestrians and road traffic:
- From 08:00 on 19 October 2026 until 22:00 on 21 October 2026.
During filming, access will also be restricted to the square adjacent to the Oskars Kalpaks Bridge, as well as to the access road and parking area at the southern breakwater of the Karosta Canal.
Vessel traffic in the Karosta Canal will also be restricted during filming. The Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Authority would like to express its gratitude to the stevedoring companies operating at the Port of Liepaja for supporting this major film production project and, wherever possible, adjusting their operational schedules to accommodate the filming.
Five port terminals operate actively in the Karosta Canal: Baltic Transshipment Center, Schwenk, DG Termināls, Norsaf and Baltex Bulk. The company LZK also continues to carry out ship repair operations at Tosmare Shipyard.
The selection of the Oskars Kalpaks Bridge as one of the production's central filming locations will bring Liepaja significant international exposure. The series is expected to reach millions of viewers across multiple countries, providing a powerful platform for raising the city's international profile.
Successfully hosting a production of this scale further strengthens Liepaja's reputation as an internationally minded, professional port city capable of delivering complex projects. This creates new opportunities to attract future film, arts and creative industry projects, generating long-term economic and reputational benefits for both the city and the wider region.
