Port of Liepaja Continues Handling Grain Grown by Latvian Farmers

Liepaja Bulk Terminal - the largest dry bulk terminal at the Port of Liepaja, has signed agreements with the leading Latvian grain exporters, including Baltic Agro, LATRAPS and Linas Agro, for handling grain grown by Latvian farmers from 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027.

The terminal is currently loading locally grown wheat onto a Panamax-class vessel TUO FU 8, which is set to take on more than 60,000 tons of grain. The vessel’s destination is Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

DanStore, the second largest grain terminal at the Port of Liepaja, is also operating in accordance with its agreements. According to the terminal’s management, storage capacity is currently available, as deliveries of the new harvest are progressing relatively slowly. Unlike previous years, when long queues of trucks would form outside the terminal during this period, no such situation has been observed this year.

The company suggests that some Latvian grain growers may be holding back their produce in anticipation of more favorable sales conditions and higher prices. Grain prices currently range between EUR 250 and EUR 260 per ton, representing one of the highest levels seen in recent years.

In the coming days, DanStore expects a vessel that is scheduled to load approximately 27,000 tons of Latvian grain supplied by Baltic Agro. The cargo will be shipped to Nigeria.

Latvian grain arrives at the Port of Liepaja not only by road but also by rail. On 2 September, the Liepaja Bulk Terminal received a train consisting of 26 wagons carrying 1,820 tons of grain supplied by Baltic Agro. Another 26-wagon train from the LATRAPS cooperative is expected to arrive shortly.

Throughout its history, and particularly since operations resumed in the 1990s, the Port of Liepaja has focused on developing the handling of agricultural cargo, with particular emphasis on grain terminals and the handling of locally sourced cargo. The export of Latvian-grown grain to global markets plays an important role in the port’s overall cargo flows.

Several agricultural cargo terminals currently operate at the Port of Liepaja, with a combined annual handling capacity of approximately 5 million tons. Their total storage capacity for grain at any one time is approximately 730,000 tons.

The grain terminals at the Port of Liepaja cooperate with Latvian and international companies involved in the procurement, storage and distribution of grain to global food supply chains. All cargo operations at the Port of Liepaja, including the handling of grain in transit, are carried out in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements of the European Union and the European Commission.
