September kept the Port of Liepaja stevedores busy in handling the grain shipments grown by the Latvian farmers
In September the handled agricultural cargo accounted for more than 330 thousand tons, including soybean imports from Argentina. In total, 635 thousand tons of cargo were handled at the Port of Liepaja in September, which is 28% more than in September 2024.
As an active part of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, the port continues to attract local cargo and serves as an important logistics hub for the export of manufactured goods and trade exchange. In the bulk cargo segment, the main commodities were construction materials (75 thousand tons), wood chips (20 thousand tons), and wood pellets (17 thousand tons). In the breakbulk segment, Ro-Ro cargo dominated (139 thousand tons) due to the regular cargo-passenger ferry traffic between Liepaja and Travemünde (Germany).
Since 2018, the Port of Liepaja has managed to maintain a stable annual cargo turnover of 7–7.5 million tons and has adapted to the changes in the transport sector by supplementing traditional cargo operations with manufacturing and high value-added cargo.
In the first nine months of this year, the total cargo turnover amounted to 5.1 million tons, which is 139.9 thousand tons or 2.7% less than in the same period last year. The grain season started later than usual this year due to heavy rainfall, and the demand for energy-related cargo, such as wood chips, remains relatively low. During the aforesaid period, 86 thousand Ro-Ro units were handled at the Port of Liepaja, 871 ships were serviced, and the total number of passengers exceeded 81 thousand.
