This week, Jānis Lapiņš, Advisor to the Liepaja SEZ CEO on Renewable Energy Issues, participated in the world’s leading wind industry trade fair “WindEnergy Hamburg 2024", which is wholly tailored toward addressing the major issues, facing the international wind energy sector.

By a symbolic public demolition of the entrance pass control point building of the former steel plant "Liepajas Metalurgs", today, on September 23, construction of the Liepaja Industrial Park has been commenced in order to transform the former steel plant into a modern, green industrial park, as formerly initiated and planned by the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Authority.

As part of the trade mission organized by the Ministry of Economics of Latvia and Investment and Development Agency of Latvia in the United States (USA), on September 16, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the US company "KBR" and the Liepaja Special Economic Zone company “GI Terminal” to accelerate decarbonization through production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and the development a CO2 transport, liquefaction and export terminal in Liepaja. Under the terms of the MoU, KBR will offer technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, proprietary equipment, and catalyst support for the development of a new SAF production unit with an expected capacity of up to 100 kilotons per year. The partnership will also include consulting and engineering services for the development of a CO2 liquefaction terminal, enabling the capture and safe transport of CO2 from industrial sources.

On August 27, 2024, the Port of Liepaja Regulations entered into force in a new version.

The Liepaja SEZ Authority is continuing to implement construction of the infrastructure for fishermen in the Port of Liepaja – installing the lighting, rainwater drainage networks and overall improvements of the territory - and has announced elaboration of an explanatory note and author supervision for the said object – resulting in the construction of an access road to the fish unloading spot at Berths 92A and 92B.

Next month, based on the long-term site development plan, the first reconstruction works at the former bankrupt steel plant “Liepajas Metalurgs” will start to transform it into an environmentally friendly circular economy oriented industrial plant.
