Defense Minister Explores Industrial Potential of the City and Capabilities of the Port of Liepaja
“Liepaja has strong potential for the development of the defense industry,” Defense Minister Raivis Melnis said following a one-day working visit to Liepaja.
There are companies operating in the Liepaja Special Economic Zone whose manufactured products are and have been used by the global defense industry. For example, LSEZ SIA “Interspiro Production” manufactures breathing equipment for divers and firefighters and supplies defiance forces worldwide.
Liepaja has strategic importance for Latvia’s national defense, bringing together civilian and military capabilities through development of a NATO support base, deployment of 300 conscripts, and the use and further expansion of the city’s existing industrial manufacturing potential.
During his visit, the Minister met with the officials of the City of Liepaja and the Liepaja SEZ, visited the port and industrial facilities to gain first-hand insight into their capabilities, discussed opportunities for expanding cooperation, and attended the ceremonial change of command of the Latvian Naval Forces.
