Names Assigned to the Streets Under Construction in the Liepaja Industrial Park
On August 21, during the meeting of the Liepaja City Council, eight new street names were approved for the planned streets in the territory of the former “Liepajas Metalurgs” steel plant – the future Liepaja Industrial Park.
Based on proposals and voting results submitted by the local community residents, the following street names were assigned: Trīs Skursteņu Street (Three Chimneys Street), Martena Street (Open Hearth Furnace Street), Eksporta Street (Export Street), Dzelzsgriezēja Street (Iron Cutter Street), Inženieru Street (Engineers’ Street), Čuguna Street (Cast Iron Street), Naglu Street (Nails Street), and Dūmu Street (Smoke Street).
Local residents played an active role in the naming process. Initially, during the “Made in Liepaja” exhibition, visitors could submit suggestions for street names at the Liepaja Special Economic Zone Authority’s stand. A total of 385 proposals were received.
After evaluating all submissions, 14 names were shortlisted – chosen for their relevance to the identity of the place, their absence from the list of existing city street names, and their symbolic representation of the industrial, cultural, and developmental potential of the future park. These were then put forward for a public vote, in which 301 votes were cast. As a result, eight names were selected and submitted for approval by the City Council.
Assigning street names is a prerequisite for their inclusion in the official address register.
Currently, several new streets are under construction within the Liepaja Industrial Park territory. The work includes pedestrian and cycling paths, underground utilities, street lighting, and landscaping. Construction on Export Street and Engineers’ Street is in its final stage, with commissioning planned in the near future. Work also continues on Nails Street and Iron Cutter Street, where the base asphalt layer has already been laid.
All works within the first phase of the project are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
