The ammonia plant will not be built, hydrogen will be produced further offshore
At the working meeting, the Head of “CIS Liepaja” Tor Arne Pedersen announced that, by agreement with the Liepaja City Council and the Liepaja SEZ Authority, the possible location of the planned hydrogen production plant has been changed – further north in the port water area, and that, due to changes in the market and the demand, “CIS Liepaja” has abandoned the development of the green ammonia production project.
Tor Arne Pedersen emphasized that safety comes first. “From the very beginning of the project development, we have been looking for the best locations and technological solutions for the green hydrogen production plant and terminal, safety is something that we take very seriously, and we are fully aware that it is critically important for the project. For this reason, we have also taken a closer look at various solutions on how we can solve safety problems in the best possible way. This is important for us as project developers, for the municipality and the Liepaja SEZ Authority.”
Also, he once again introduced the project idea, its current status, the company shareholders and experience in the development of various projects. Answering the question why Liepaja has been selected, Tor Arne Pedersen admitted that they initially studied all the Nordic countries – Norway, Sweden, Finland, where the main obstacle was the lack of high-voltage power grid capacity, then looked further at the Baltic countries. The recommendations of the Norwegian Embassy in Latvia and the high-quality business environment in Liepaja together with the advantages provided by the Liepaja Special economic Zone and its advantages played a significant role. Currently, risk and environmental impact assessment is underway.
In order to get acquainted with the sustainable industry projects in the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, the management of the Liepaja SEZ and the City Council, the city councilors, investment project developers, the management of the State Environmental Service and representatives of environmental organizations gathered for a joint meeting.
